Can I use my commercial vehicle personally?

Although a commercial auto insurance policy is intended for commercial use, we do understand that sometimes you may need to use it for personal use. You may use it personally as well however that should not be your primary use. Your commercial auto insurance company must be aware that you will also be using it personally so they can apply the right premium.

Any other material changes or changes to your vehicle use must always be communicated to your insurance company.

How many vehicles are required for a fleet?

A commercial fleet policy offers similar coverage to a standard commercial auto insurance policy but it is for clients who have five or more vehicles. By pairing multiple commercial vehicles together, you can qualify for better pricing. In some cases, a driver’s record may not be ideal. We will work to create solutions for your vehicles and drivers.

Is commercial auto insurance more expensive then personal auto insurance in Mississauga?

As mentioned earlier, there are many rating factors that affect the premium of a commercial auto policy. There really is no exact answer to this question and the best thing to do is to get a quote.

In most cases, commercial auto insurance will be more expensive compared to personal auto insurance in Mississauga because a vehicle used for business is exposed to more risk and generally is used much more compared to simply commuting to and from work. Commercial vehicles often have tools and machinery attached to the vehicles which also increases risk of a claim arising.

It needs to be known that if you are using your personal auto for your business, you must update your insurance company immediately and get the proper  commercial auto policy setup as your claim may be denied.

Can I get commercial auto insurance with a bad record?

Having a bad driving record is never a good thing and you should do your best to keep it clean. However, we all have bad years and life happens. Luckily we can still accept high risk commercial auto drivers.

It’s always best to have a discussion with your commercial auto insurance broker to make a plan for the future and what steps need to be taken to fix your record. Accidents will stay on your record for six years and tickets will affect you for three years. Non-pay cancellation will also be rated for three years.

Do I need Commercial auto insurance?

Commercial Auto Insurance is designed for business owners and contractors who rely on their vehicles for business.

If you drive to clients, carry commercial equipment or supplies in your vehicle or tow a trailer for business, than you require commercial auto insurance.

If you are using your personal auto policy for commercial purposes, your claim may be declined and your policy could be cancelled.

How are Commercial Vehicles Rated?

Commercial auto insurance uses a complex rating strategy developed by years of actuarial expertise and is heavily regulated by government organizations.

Commercial auto insurance uses many of the same rating factors that personal auto insurance actuaries use to determine your premium.

These include: Address, years licensed, model of your vehicle, accidents, tickets and past insurance cancellations.

The key differences are that your commercial auto policy will also rate you on the type of business you are in and how far from your address you travel. If you drive hundreds of kilometers a day, you may pay more compared to a locally used vehicle.

Some vehicles are also considered “heavy use” and may require a little more work to insure. For the majority of commercial use vehicles, a policy can be made quickly and for an excellent price.

Commercial Trailer

When purchasing a commercial auto insurance policy for your work vehicle, you should always add your trailer to the policy. If a claim occurs and the insurer discovers you were hauling a trailer and it was never mentioned, your claim may be denied.

Commercial Auto Insurance Tips

OPCF 27 – With a personal auto policy, if you ask for full coverage, in many cases you will also get rental car coverage which is called OPCF27. With a commercial policy, if you want rental car coverage, be sure to specify you would like 27a as that is different. 27a will give you a rental car coverage which you can use for your business purposes.

Increase Liability Limits -In today’s litigious times, people are suing for more than ever. If you are involved in an accident on the road which leads to an injury or even death of a party, almost surely your company will be sued. Lawyers will asses your assets and based on that, they may sue you for more than your policy covers (1 million in liability coverage is most common). For this reason, we advise at least $2,000,000 coverage as the price difference is minimal in most cases.

Combine With a CGL Policy – If you are the owner of the business, it is also recommended to pair a CGL (Commercial General Liability) policy along with your commercial auto insurance. A commercial auto policy covers your vehicle while on the road. Once you park the car and begin working on your project, you will have no liability coverage. Pairing a CGL policy with a commercial auto policy may also qualify you for further discounts.
